"OBITUARY OF SAMUEL FACKLER"
"Samuel Fackler, son of Valentine and Elizabeth Fackler, was born near Dayton, Ohio, on April 12, 1830. He came to Iowa in 1837, finally settling on the place known as Fackler's Grove, and where he lived for more than 70 years, later moving to Ely, where he lived six years. April 5, 1860, he was married to Malinda Dennis, who was born in Cedar County, in 1840, one of the first white children born there. To this union was born six children: Mrs. Lydia Swaun, Hartford, South Dakota; Wesley Fackler, Churdan, Iowa; James, deceased; Samuel Fackler, Herndon, Iowa; Mrs. Laura Andrew, deceased; Mrs. Eva Andrew, Churdan, Iowa.
His wife died March 9, 1880. He was married again to Mrs. Elizabeth McGraw, and to this union was born two children: Mrs. Elizabeth Lentz, North Liberty, Iowa; David Fackler, Ely, Iowa.
Besides his children he leaves four step-children. Mrs. Myrtle Rogers, Estherville, Iowa; Mrs. Jennie Wood, Des Moines, Iowa; Herbert McGraw, Estherville, Iowa; Harrison McGraw, Curtis, Nebraska. Twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the Brethern (sic) Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Since the death of wife on August 3, 1919, he has made his home with his son, David, of Ely, and his daughter, Mrs. Lentz, of North Liberty. About three months ago he visited his children in Greene County, which he enjoyed very much. Many old acquaintance(s) having visited him at that time, besides all of his older children and all the grandchildren, except three. Several had come more than 200 miles to be with him.
He often spoke of his approaching end and said he was ready and anxious to go. On the morning of February 20, 1925, he fell peacefully asleep, aged 94 years, 10 months and 8 days.
The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Dr. Miller, and a male quartet of Cedar Rapids with the burial at Robins. All his children being present except two stepchildren, who were prevented on account of illness." *******************************************************************************
The following life history of Mr. Fackler was published in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Saturday, August 4, 1923. This interview was conducted by a reporter just 19 months before Samuel Fackler's death:
"One of the oldest men in Linn county and the last of those who came here as early as 1838, is Samuel Fackler, who celebrated his ninety-third birthday last April. Mr. Fackler was known to his friends as "Uncle Sam", a nickname given him years ago and still sticking, because of his beard and side whiskers and the shape of his head which give him the appearance of having been the model for the caricature of America's Uncle Sam.
Mr. Fackler was born in Ohio, from which state his parents Mr and Mrs. Valentine Fackler moved to Indiana and then in 1837 came to Iowa, first stopping in Louisa county where they stayed for three years before moving to Linn County. The trip to Iowa was made in a prairie schooner drawn by oxen, the father and the older children walking most of the distance. There were no well marked trails to follow, no service stations on the way, but others were heeding the call of the west and passed on the benefit of their experience, directions were left at wayside places and those who had already settled in the territory proved hospitable and helpful to those along the way.
When the family reached this section, Mr. Fackler's father settled in a wood which was later named for him and which is still known as Fackler's Grove. Iowa City was laid out the fall before, and Cedar Rapids the following spring after their settlement.
The elder Fackler (Valentine) built a log cabin containing just one room, no larger than a single room in a modern farm house, and there the family of father and mother and more than ten children lived.
At first there was no floor in the cabin and only the barest of furniture, but if it seemed a hardship at the time, Mr. Fackler doesn't recall it now. The cabin was heated from the huge fireplace at the base of the chimney built of clay mud in which straws had been imbedded and which was packed between sticks as they were laid one on another.
Some of the cabins had stone chimneys where stone was available, but this was not always possible until after the settlers had time to erect a second and more commodious structure, break and haul the stone and fit it for the chimney.
Muscatine was the nearest town and it was the market place for folks of this community for many years. Mr. Fackler recalls the tedious trips to the river town, several days being necessary each time they went.
Wheat was hauled when it brought only twenty-five cents a bushel and dressed pork marketed there when it was worth only a cent a pound. Low as these prices were, the farmer of those days did not get cash for his products, and he had to take them out in trade. This was customary, but often times the settler would like to have had a little money.
Mr. Fackler recalls the days when he drove six yoke of oxen to a twenty-six inch breaking plow, when grain was first cut with a cradle and when it was thrashed with a flail. Wheat was the principal crop, but what corn was raised was cultivated with a single shovel plow. The hay was cut with a scythe and many proud records were set as swath after swath of the tall grass was cut down.
Decision of that ever-present question, "What shall we have for supper" didn't bother the housewives of those days. For there was but little choice, there was no store on the corner if she forgot something and no telephone if she was in a hurry or had to set an extra place for company. Hominy, corn bread, wild game, potatoes and other home raised vegetables and wild fruit formed the menu. Sugar was obtained from the sap of maple tree, and molasses was a common article of the table.
The cooking was done in the open fireplace or on crude stoves, while "dutch ovens" were built for baking.
The same simplicity was a characteristic of the clothes of these early settlers for most of them were made at home, for comfort and wear rather than style or to be in the vanguard of the fashions. "Store" clothes were uncommon except on special "dress-up" occasions.
The beauties of the prairies and the woods in their spring-time, summer and autumnal dresses given by the generous hand of nature, were the settlers art galleries of scenic splendor, their unconscious inspiration and their friendly solace in a weary hour.
When Mr. Fackler used to come to Cedar Rapids as a boy, he had to cross the river there on a ferry. The road, if there was one, was barely a defined trail and usually the settlers just started across the prairie, over the hills and through the woods in the direction of the town, following the way more by instinct than by road signs, although once the trail became common, it was not difficult to follow it.
The first school was built about 1850 -- a little cabin made of lynn poles where the children of the neighborhood learned their three R's from Israel Clark, reputed to have been the first schoolmaster and also the first one to preach at a religious service.
Religious meetings were held whenever the Methodist circuit rider came around, but his visits were few and far between. In the course of events a church was organized and regular services held."
